Like traditional schools run by DC Public Schools, charters are public, tuition-free and open to all. Both traditional and charters are committed to quality education. Where they differ is that traditional schools are run by a central authority – the Chancellor of DC Public Schools. In contrast, charters are run by non-profits, under agreements approved by the DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB).
The 90 year old Powell Elementary School is scheduled for modernization which includes renovations to two of the existing school buildings (Buildings A and B) and the construction of two new building additions (Buildings C and D) and the addition of Twin Oaks Community Garden.
